The cable-operated gearbox system is a design that allows gears to be shifted using double-acting remote control cables.
Main elements of cable drives
Gear shift cable drives consist of a mechanism for controlling the drive (master support or gearbox links), flexible remote control cables, translator and reactive traction.
Using ball-and-socket angle joints, dampers (for additional vibration damping) and other types of tips, the ends of the gearbox cables are attached to the links and translators.
The final fittings of the gearbox cables are installed in the standard places of the master support, and the cable casings are attached along the installation route.
For the correct layout of the nodes, the links come with a vertical and horizontal type of control cable connection. Also, depending on the type of gearbox and translator, a synchronous and asynchronous type of gear shifting can be used.
The main advantages of mechanical cable control systems
In the early designs of gear shift drive mechanisms, a direct force transmission system from the lever to the gearbox was used. In this case, engine vibrations were transmitted to the lever, making gear shifting rigid and uncomfortable for the operator. As soon as a cable control system was introduced into the design, this problem was mitigated. Gearbox cables began to absorb transmitted vibrations. At the same time, it became possible to significantly reduce the gear lever’s travel and improve shifting precision. Thanks to the implementation of the cable drive, the gear selection mechanism was relocated from the lower part to the upper part, which allowed for an average reduction in lubricant usage by approximately 30%.
